Understanding Car Accidents in the Context of COVID-19

CarAcc11

As we all know at this point, Florida began experiencing a surge of COVID-19 cases seemingly as soon as the state emerged from its coronavirus shutdown. Many aspects of life had already slowed down for Floridians earlier this year and this resurgence of the virus has forced many of us to reduce or cease altogether the few steps we had begun taking toward social gatherings in the context of this new normal. However, there are certain places we simply can’t help going for essential things such as medical appointments and food. In addition, some people actually work in positions supplying the goods and services the rest of us need. Therefore, even as car travel has been reduced with increased teleworking and decreased social activities, people are still hitting the road and car accidents are still occurring. And while many of us are more familiar with Florida car accidents than we would like to be, car accidents in the context of COVID-19 are a new phenomenon and one that we are all having to adjust to.

Everyone should understand the following considerations in regard to finding yourself involved in a car accident during an unprecedented pandemic.

The Basics Haven’t Changed

Initially, you should understand that the same steps that have always been recommended following a car accident should still be undertaken, especially if you suspect that you’ve been injured because of someone else’s negligence. Following the car accident, you should pull over in order to fully comply with the law. In addition, you should call 911 and ensure that a police report is generated, obtain any needed emergency medical treatment, and take pictures and video of the scene of the accident and the surrounding area.

Social Distancing is Now an Important Consideration

It is also important to understand that there are other factors that should be handled differently due to the fact that social distancing is now an important consideration at the scene of any accident. First and foremost, ensure that you are wearing a mask yourself before getting out of the car if you are physically able to do so, and before interacting with the driver and any passengers in the other vehicle. Ask the other parties to also wear masks and if they refuse, wait for authorities to arrive before continuing your interaction. In addition, make sure that you don’t allow anyone else to physically touch your things and instead record the information you need such as the name and contact information of the other parties and any witnesses yourself in your own phone.
